All about Direct Care Workers (DCWs)
Direct Care Workers (DCWs) are an integral part of home health care in Pennsylvania. They provide a range of services to individuals with disabilities, enabling them to live independently.
DCWs provide assistance with the Activities of Daily Living, such as:
- Bathing or showering
- Dressing
- Getting in and out of bed and/or a chair
- Walking
- Using the toilet
- Eating
DCWs can also provide assistance with Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, such as:
- shopping
- housekeeping
- laundry
Additionally, DCWs can provide companionship services, such as:
- providing emotional support
- engaging in leisure activities
- Accompanying them on public transportation
DCWs must have a minimum of 12 hours of training in the areas of communication, safety, and emergency procedures. Additionally, DCWs must have at least one year of experience in providing home care services or have a certification from a recognized home care training program.
